TO THE HMO PROBLEM

"I already have a life insurance policy with another company, and I don't want to change."

Well, it is up to you whether your insurance only helps your family if you die prematurely, or whether it also helps keep you alive and happy. If you like that insurance company so much, perhaps you'd prefer to move your health coverage there as well?

Insurance companies often sell policy coverage between each other; if you already have a policy at another company, with rates locked in that you don't want to disturb, you may be able to convince your HMO to purchase the policy. Since your health insurer may be able to prolong your life further than the actuarial tables the other company is using say, it would be a good deal for them.
